He was one of the first to discover Merlin's magic and was known to be in love with Guinevere. Many (including Arthur Pendragon) regarded him as the noblest of Camelot's Knights, especially after sacrificed himself on the Isle of the Blessed. Camelot is a 1960 musical by Alan Jay Lerner (book and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music). It is based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from T. H. White 's 1958 novel The Once and Future King. In the French-inspired Arthurian chivalric romance tradition, Lancelot is the orphaned son of King Ban of the lost kingdom of Benwick, raised in the fairy realm by the Lady of the Lake. The plot, however, focuses on the forces out to destroy Camelot – the adulterous romance between Lancelot and Arthur's queen, Guenevere, and the machinations of Arthur's bitter illegitimate son, Alex Joseph Grayson (Lancelot) provides a faultless link between the musical's central characters. Grayson accurately portrays and unwavering love of Camelot and admiration for Arthur while at the When Lancelot and the queen began their affair, the Knight of the Lake considered fleeing Camelot with her, but his loyalty to Artoria and his sense of duty prevented him from doing so.
